The original Turtle Trading System relies on pure momentum, using Donchian Channels to identify breakouts and enter long positions at multi-day highs. Position sizing is dynamically adjusted based on the Average True Range (ATR) to equalize risk across different asset classes. However, applying these exact rules to modern triple-leveraged ETFs without modification is a recipe for a catastrophic margin call.

Modernizing the Turtles: My Adapted Version

To adapt this classic strategy for today's leveraged markets, we implemented three critical risk management upgrades. First, we use a twenty-day ATR for volatility-targeted position sizing to equalize risk across extreme assets like SOXL. Second, we added a dual-channel fast exit using a twenty-day Donchian Channel low, and finally, we default to cash or safe assets like TLT and GLD when they fall below their one-hundred-day SMAs.

The Performance Metrics: 2017 to Present

Backtesting this modernized strategy from twenty-seventeen to the present yielded impressive quantitative results. The adapted system delivered a total return of two hundred ninety-nine point eight percent, representing a compound annual growth rate of fourteen point nine percent. Thanks to our strict regime filters and fast exits, the Sharpe ratio reached a respectable zero point seven four while keeping the maximum drawdown contained to just negative twenty-four point four percent.
